It’s a simple, clean idea. HG Wells (Malcolm McDowell) goes ahead and invents a Time Machine. He’s having some friends over to his house in Victorian England when all of a sudden, one of them (a terrifying David Warner) turns out to be Jack The Ripper. Jack hops into the Time Machine and escapes to modern day (1979) San Francisco. HG follows him, falls in love with a bank teller (Mary Steenburgen) and what results is a fucking blast of joyous escapism with some great twists along the way. It, technically, was an influence on the Austin Powers films — rent it and see. I bring this up because I saw this picture on my Tumblr feed, and I also stole Mary Steenburgen’s way of saying “Herbert” when I was doing this.
